Our beloved Rudy passed away around 9 PM last night. He was surrounded by his family and a few friends.
Rudy was a driving force at JT&S and owner of Como Roundhouse Products. He has provided tremendous leadership for many years and his generous contributions have made many things possible. But most of
all, Rudy was a great friend. We all will miss him.
Please keep Rudy's wife, daughter and family in your thoughts.

Hello all,
I'm really shocked to reading this message, although I expected to get such bad news.
Without Rudy, our list never would have been such a success, and without Rudy, I never would have become a member at Train Mountain nor would I have been their in 2000 and 2003.
And our schedule for our vacation this summer was set up in such a way, that we planned some time in Los Angeles in the hope, to see Rudy a last time.
Sadly, this hope will never be fulfilled, and so I only can ask you all, who will be next Friday at the memorial service to pass my condolence to Esther and the remaining family.
It's hard for me to be so far away and not be able to escort Rudy on his last way.
I hope, that someone will give me the direction to his gravesite, so that I can spent some time with him in june.

My condolences to the Van Wingen family, I only spoke with Rudy a few times through the years, but it was clear that he loved our hobby and has done as much as anyone ever has to promote it and share his enthusiasm for it. We all have gained from Ruby's participation. Thank you Rudy!
Men I need to locate a set of K-27 builders drawings. A few years ago there was talk of putting the set on CD, does anyone know if this took place? Also "Soni" seemed to be the person that had the first set to come out of Chama, does anyone have a good email address for "Soni"? If you know anything about these drawings, please let me know.

A complete set of K-27 plans in 2-1/2" scale can be brought from Rich Ulin in Colorado. I have a set, and they are very nicely done.

David, I called Richard Ulin today, he probably does have 2.5" scale drawings, but I can't use those, I need full scale builders drawings. I'm working in a larger scale so I need copies of the originals.
I read that someone was going to scan and put them all on CD a few years aoog, does anyone know if this ever happened.

Subject: Electric Drive Calculator
Hi all,
I have uploaded an Excel spreadsheet to the files area that might be handy to some for sizing electric motor drives. ( DriveSystemCalculations.xls)
I was partly inspired by Tom Artzberger's item on the Riding Railway University DVD volume 2, and you can see some of his rules of thumb in the load & friction calculations. The motor characteristics came from distilling a variety of sources as it soon became apparent there is a huge amount of opinion that varies so wide as to be diametrically opposed in some cases. In these circumstances I chose what I thought was the more consistent case.
A couple of warnings:
The sheets are laid out in a mixture of metric and imperial. Growing up with both, I prefer the math in one and the visualization of the other. I guess I am a 5ft, 25mm kind of guy who thinks all power should be of the horse
variety, but Kilograms make more sense than ounces - you get the picture
Second warning: I have tried this sheet on a friends existing locomotive and it was exceptionally conservative in its predictions. Actually it reckoned a quite capable locomotive in reality should have trouble moving much of a load at all. I haven't decided whether this is just good conservative design, or there is an inherent problem in my calculations.
This has been a huge learning curve for me - digging into all the necessary formulae and physics - but fun all the same. Naturally I am interested in any feedback or suggestions and I hope we all end up with a solid, proven and useful tool.

Ah yes but to all of us guys long in the tooth, the old stuff sticks with us as MMs are the little colored things that one eats for a snack. Dont think that beyond one meter 39inches that I will ever understand the metric system have had good hearted people try there best to explain it to me also. So I guess that a liter will always be something that one is carried on rather than a liquid measurement. Yes my head is made out of stone. Just a little humor on a beautiful sunny eastern Washington Sunday morning to you all.
Good Steaming and hope that most can make it to Train Mountain this year.
Boyd Butler
Oh yes and to that surveyor fellow who shows up at TM, still dont understand how to read one of them poles he uses to measure with.
