Good luck in your track laying as just thinking about getting down to fix a section anymore makes me want to go have coffee and run trains instead.

I LOVE tracklaying. I would be inclined to play civil engineer than run trains sometimes. Must make me odd!

Isn't that the great thing about this hobby. Some like track laying, some like building locomotives, and then there are others (like me) who just wanna sit back with a can of suds and ride my trains! That's why my mainline is continous!

Tom,

I scribbled on your drawing. I drew the rod in place to see where it went through the sill. I also drew a block to use as a guide for drilling. The rod would be at an 18.5 degree angle according to the drawing.

Anyone in the group building a 2-1/2inch scale narrow gauge 2-8-0: a D&RGW C-16 or C-19?

I have a Mikado in 2 1/2" scale. I also know a guy who is building a c-19 (I think).
What can I do for you George?
By the way, you should see the neat loco that Bill Laird built.

Hi George;

My partner, Kim Beard and I have mostly finished a Conway C-19 this year. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have. You can see some photos of the engine in progress at: www.projectrgs41.org.
It ran great at the Triennial this past June.

Subject: Clishay engine help

I'm building the engine for the Clishay steam Locomotive and nead help from builders of that series that ran in "LIVE STEAM", in the late seventies. In the May'78 issue, page 40, the the piston is dimensioned 1.265", while the bore is 2.50". And in the june issue the valve rod (234)lacks the diameter dimension. Can some one help me with this?
Thanks,

Ray,

The April '78 issue, page 26 shows the bore at 1.250. I'm not sure where you got the 2.50 bore. That would be the total of both cylinders. That would be a monster bore for a small loco like the CliShay. Then I see the 1.265 on p. 40 as you said. That's an off-the-wall measurement. The narrative says to make the piston no more than .0015 smaller than the bore. You can make the pistons fit the 1.25 bores.

The valve rod appears to be 3/16" diameter looking at the other mating parts. I think you will find various descrepancies in the plans but just need to use caution and pick up on the problem areas. There are several error notes in the articles. You should read back to front on the series to pick up the error notes.

Thanks Jim for the reply. the "2.50" bore" was a mis-type. I'll take your advice and re-read the series from beginning to end.

Hi again Ray,

You may want to read a couple of issues beyond the series. I'm not sure but I think there are some "errata" notes discovered after people started building the loco.

Seems unusual that none of the builders from that time are here on the list and bringing up suggestions.

Cheers,

Subject: Gon help

Hello group!
I would like to start on a ET & WNC Gondola. I have a simple drawing that I purchased a few years ago from E.H. Cass. I was wondering if anyone has built a gon based on the ET in 2.5" NG? I am 7.5" gauge.

based on the drawings the car would be 18" wide and 92.5" long. It seems like most 2.5" scale NG equipment is 20" wide. thoughts?

Mike,

Some full-sized older rolling stock did not always fit the norm.
Originally, the D&RGW narrow gauge cabooses where not much over 6 feet wide as they were worried any wider they would tip over!

Subject: Eritrea 0-4-4-0 Mallet

Hi Guys,

The little Eritrea 0-4-4-0 Mallet looks like a very interesting little loco, presumably of Italian decent, and running on 950mm (?) gauge rails in Africa.

http://www.byz.org/~morven/Railway32/eritrea/index.html

Does anyone have any drawings or reasonably detailed pictures of this little fellow as it looks like a strong and little loco suitable for 7¼.... and with no tender, easy to fire on the run.

Anyone know if the Mountain Car people are having email problems or away or something?

Ive sent several emails to check up on a July order but no response. Wondering if I am getting caught up in a spam filter or some such.

Tried both mcc@mountaincar.com and moucar@aol.com (which was used for payment detailed etc)

Any help appreciated.

Subject: new railroad, new equipment

Hi Folks,

I got my new equipment unloaded Saturday morning, and does it ever look great! (Please see my website www.cvry.org for the first photos) I'm also amazed at the impact sound has on an electric `diesel outline' locomotive.

The loco was a used RMI 35-tonner that I sent in for rebuild plus the addition of sound. The op car, flat, and caboose were ordered new. The build quality, fit and finish of all of this equipment is exceptional. I'm very pleased to have this as the core of my new 2 ½ scale railroad.

I have a bunch of Train Mountain plastic ties I purchased earlier this year, and will have 2000 feet of steel rail next week, so we will be very busy this winter getting the new track laid. The first project is to build a shelter for the equipment, and then tracks on the ground!!!

If any of you are in or visiting the Santa Clara Valley and want to visit the railroad (all 100' of it) feel free to contact me (see the contact page on the website). You are welcome to come on by.
