Hello together,
last month, Gerd reported about the track construction for his Lost Valley Railroad.
This track is also for use at the Sinsheim Indoor Live Steam Festival 2008 ff.
During the indoor-show 2007, for the first time a special 2' narrow-gauge-area was set up into the dual-gauge-layout, and this was really fun to operate and interesting for the visitors.
And with this success, it was planned to expand the narrow-gauge-area and to improve the operation-possibilities.
So, Martin and Gerd worked together, built the portalbe track and developed a possible track-plan.
Last week, this track-plan was approved by the Malu-Bahn, which is in charge for the hall 4, where all the 7.25" models operate together with the 5" narrow-gauge.
Although it is 5" narrow gauge, I think, it is interesting for some of you.
So, I took the track-plans, made translations and put all together into a PDF-File, which you can find under

Gerd, who is a member of our group, is the driving force behind this project, together with Martin from Poland (he only works their near the border to Belorussia, he is a german).
I hope, that Gerd will give some more informations.

The whole project is called the ARGE >>5" - Feldbahn-BW<<, which translate into Team 5" - Light Railroad Depot.

At the moment, their are 4 people involved regarding the building and trackside details, and 4 people (3 are the same, one is different) are coming with engines and cars.

Thank you from the one, who at this time only participates with the Struever Kuli, and this engine was built by Gerd. Last year, during his change in scale, he sold it to me ;-)
Just a little bit more and there maybe Train Mountain German Edition 2010 !
I don't think, that we ever will be able to compare with Train Mountain.
We do not have the needed space, the needed money and the needed volunteers for a layout of this size.

Thanks for the cool links. I do have one comment though, I'm sure Quentin would never approve of that bridge over the track! :) As always wonderful models and very creative ways of enjoying our hobby.
Only a couple of more weeks to our first Narrow Gauge Meet. Snow is gone, track maintainance has started, can't wait - should be fun!

Owner/builder of RGS#1 at MLS Spring Meet 2007, Phoenix, AZ
I took the "goose" to the Maricopa Live Steamers Spring 2007 Meet in Phoenix, AZ and had a great time running it without problems over their 8+ miles of track (http://www.maricopalivesteamers.com/).
The "goose" is powered by a 5 HP Honda horizontal gas engine with a centrifugal clutch. The clutch is connected to a simple forward/neutral/reverse lawnmower type transmission from Surplus Center (http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2007040302445555&item=13-1230&catname=) by chain and sprocket. The output of the transmission drives the rear axle by sprocket and chain.
I heavily relied on Tim Mula's "Quick Book" on RGS#1 and photos I took of the full size replica of RGS#1 at the Ridgeway Railroad Museum. Custom graphics on the "goose" were done by Connie Miracle, Miracle Railroad Products (http://home.comcast.net/~miraclerailroadproducts/home.html).
I have lots of photos of the Ridgeway Railroad Museum (http://www.ridgwayrailroadmuseum.org/motor1.html) RGS#1 replica and my own construction photos if anyone is interested in more details.

Which bridge do you mean? The movable turning bridge in this photo:
If so, why not?
This isn't freelance, it has a prototype on 2' farm-railroads and was used to connect temporary tracks on the farms with the mainline. This bridge is layed on the track, the cars are switched, and than the bridge is removed.
Only a couple of more weeks to our first Narrow Gauge Meet.
Snow is gone, track maintainance has started, can't wait - should be fun!
I'm sure, it will be fun, and I'm really sad, that I cannot participate. But no chance for financial reasons, it's to expensive to come over.
I'm with you all in my mind during the meet, and please think of me, when you are enjoying all the nice narrow gauge models.

Hello Russ,
now I know, what you mean, but I have to say, that this is NOT a bridge.
It's a unloading - ramp, and normally a "broad"gauge car is placed on a track aside the ramp, from where the load of the tipper-waggons is put into the gondola on the broad-gauge-track.
That it was used like a bridge is only caused by the minimal space, we got for the Feldbahn-BW.
So, no rule is broken ;-)

Many of you may know Jack Lucks of Ft. Worth, Texas. Jack is a long time live steamer and member of the Annetta Valley and Western RR and Southwestern Live Steamers. Jack is not doing well. The following is an e-mail sent out by his longtime close friend and next door neighbor, Tom Stamey. I urge all of you who know Jack to send him a card, let him feel the love in the fraternity of live steam.
I don't hardly know how to start this because I have become quite emotional about it. But, I guess the best thing to do is come right out and tell you that Jack is in pretty bad shape. He's been having health problems for several months and in the last month or so they have become much worse. Doctors fear he has cancer of either the pancreas, stomach, or liver or any combination of them. Tests are due back Monday to give them an idea where it is and how to treat it, if possible. Yesterday they drew off several liters of fluid from his stomach area with has helped lessen pain that has really bothered him for the last few weeks. He has lost about 30 lbs and his strength and stamina have gone to the bottom fairly fast. When you combine that with the loss of most of his sight it is really a sad situation. He can no longer drive a vehicle.
He informed me a couple of weeks ago that he would no longer run an engine because he could not see well enough to read a water glass and did not want to ruin his engine or endanger anyone. What hurt him most is that he would "miss all the great people" he had come to know because of the live steam hobby.
I, his wife Shirley, and his daughter Barbara, hope that his illness is treatable and we steadfastly hold out hope for that. Jack is very week and I ask that you not try to call him in the hospital. He catnaps for sleep and some of the testing really zaps him. Cards to him thru his home address of 3025 Choctaw Trail, Ft Worth 76116 would cheer him, I am sure. He thought a lot of all of you.

Thanks for the offer, but I am afraid it has gone beyond the point where he would get any enjoyment out of them. We learned today that the cancer is untreatable and he went home today under the care of Hospice. He is also almost blind from an unrelated illness. Best all who know Jack can do is send him a card and keep he and his family in your prayers.

What size fittings are you planning to use. If they are under 12mm you should be fine just tapping the sheet.
Larger fittings may need to be welded/brazed/silver soldered.
Can you access the sheet from the inside to put a threaded insert turned with a lip on the OD? Put a threaded
(ID) fitting in a lathe, turn the OD down to leave a larger lip at the bottom end. Insert in a hole in the sheet with larger end on the inside and silver solder from the outside? You may be able to tie a cord through hole and pull it into place. You may be able to use an OD nut on the insert with no welding. This worked well to replace the melt plug in the crown sheet of a 1913 CASE.

On our 15" gauge welded boilers at Sandley's, we used a packing gland that was welded to the front tube sheet for our dry pipes. Depending on the size of the boiler, the tube sheet was 3/8" or 1/2" thick. The packing gland
allowed the dry pipe to expand and contract separately from the boiler.

Several years ago, like about 1992(+-), I sold a 12" gauge Pacific "pile of parts" to Larry Goldsby of Detroit, MI. It had an unfired (new) certified boiler built by East Bay Boiler in Oakland, CA in about 1955 as I recall.
I have often wondered what happened to that locomotive and if it was ever put back together.
The locomotive was originally built in the Midwest by a university class I was told.
That could be a wives tale.
It was later bought and operated in the Auburn, CA area by a person named Pickering.
He had passed away by the time I bought it.
Does anyone know of this locomotive?

Yes he does not use computers as that way he doesn't waste time on them like we do. He is working on some narrow gauge cars for a fellow when I called him a week or two ago. At the pace he goes who knows how many he has built by now as I said fiddling on these things like we do slows him down.
