Subject: What happened to the Turtle Post RR?
I saw on one of the fourms a while back that the Turlte Post was having it's last run.
When I lived in Tracy, California my son use to go to school and play ball just down and across the street from this railroad, even though I didn't realize it until we about moved away from there 4 years ago. I did go up the road one day to the house...had to stop for a train to cross over the driveway before continuing to the back where the main platform was. There were lot of cars there and they had lots of trains running around. I talked with the brother of the owner (as the owner was out running a train) had invited me to go for a ride but didn't have time as had to get back over to the ball field for my son's second game. I drove by several times the last few months we lived there but the timing was off as I never saw another train run. Now on DLS I see all the track/turntable lots of stuff for sale, kind of sad it look to be a very impressive railroad.
So my question is what happened?
Thanks,
Dave

In the last issue of Live Steam Magazine, there was a full page ad for the house which included the railroad. I think it was reduced to 3.9 million. Had I won the lotto it would have been an instant sale. :) It is a shame to see such a beautiful railroad taken apart and sold off piecemeal. It looks to be all quality RMI stuff which is the best out there. I can't imagine what the cost to purchase and install was, had to be close to a millon.

Nothing happened. Bob bought the place as a raw land investment and planted nut trees. They are fully developed and now he is selling the property. The property has been advertised for the last couple years or so.
Bob bought 5 acres down in Tehachapi and doesn't want to build a railroad on it. He is in the local club down there.
So it's just a business decision, nothing amiss...

There are 80 turnouts besides the track, etc. All the stuff is RMI. It wasn't cheap to build the railroad, for sure.
Trouble is, the railroad was not an enhancement to selling the property.

Jerry,
Thanks for the info.
So sad to see it go away though it looked nicer than some clubs. Good to hear he isn't getting out of the hobby completely. I remember seeing photo's of 3 3/4" mogul? nice looking engine.
Thanks again for the reply,
Dave

Well Pete,
The sound system, you can get from www.phoenixsound.com and the controller from either 4QD, curtis (golf cart controllers) or look on www.discoverlivesteam.com... for sale pages or TotalEToys.com...
Hope this helps.

I'm not sure which electric lawn mower motors you have, but the ones I've seen are AC and by design will likely have very poor low speed performance. The usual motor controllers that are used with low voltage DC motors aren't going to work. There may be some industrial style controllers that would work but I'd need to know more about your motors before making a suggestion. Also, what were you planning for a power source? Batteries or motor/gen set? One of these years I'm going to build an SD90ACE with true high voltage 3-phase freq drive, I think I'd have enough room in the monster to make it work.
