Subject: Denver and San Diego in 2010
My wife and I are likely to be visiting Colorado and San Diego in 2010, but at the moment we're not sure when.
Can someone point me in the direction of clubs or other tracks in the areas so I can find operating/opening times for them?
I am likely to be in Colorado for about 1 month but will have some time to travel around when there, so hopefully I can fit in a few visits. I already have the Cumbres and Toltec, Durango and Silverton, and Manitou and Pikes Peak on the "must do" list.
Many thanks,
John

Chula Vista Live Steamers is a 7.5" ga. track in San Diego County. It typically has runs on the 2nd weekend (counted by Saturdays) of each month.
There are two layouts in Orange County. One of them is Orange County Model Engineers in Costa Mesa. I've not been to the other one because their run day coincides with the day my wife and I run the 1907 steam locomotive in Poway (northern San Diego county).
Riverside County Live Steamers is steam only.
Los Angeles Live Steamers has a great layout in the area near Griffith Park/Burbank.
There may be private layouts you can visit.

Thanks for that. Please tell me more about Poway - it doesn't have to be 7.5" gauge :-)

The Poway-Midland Railroad is a half-mile loop of 42" ga. track on which we run several pieces of equipment on different weekends (counted by Sundays):
| 1st & 3rd: | 1907 Baldwin 0-4-0 13-ton locomotive, tender, coach |
| 2nd (Sat only): | 1894 LA Railways Trolley (used in "Hello, Dolly" & Rice-a-Roni Commercials) powered by a Corvair engine |
| 4th & 5th: | 1950 Fairmont speeder, 1880 ore cars |
The locomotive runs from about March to early December. After the annual Christmas in the Park event (12/12/09) when the locomotive runs at night, it is shut down for annual inspection and maintenance and either the trolley or speeder is run on the 1st & 3rd weekend.
There are special events on July 4, the Rendezvous in Poway in September, the Train Song Festival in October, Halloween, and Christmas in the Park. On the first three of these events include historical reenactors such as cowboys who rob the train.
My wife and I are engineers on the locomotive (and run the other equipment as well) and our typical volunteer days are the first and third Sundays along with special events.
For those who can visit when we are operating, it is sometimes possible to arrange rides on the bench seat on the tender behind the locomotive cab. Ask the conductor.

You've got a great start on the Colorado list. After wanting to go to CO for many years, I was able to spend 9 days there in August and hit all three. And I'm ready to go back again. If you can only do three, those are it. If you have time to go up near Denver, Georgetown Loop and Colorado RR Museum are near each other and worth the time. We managed to hit a few other RR sights on the way back from Silverton to Denver, following the northern part of the narrow gauge circle - see my pictures linked below.
Also wanted to see, but not enough time:
Cripple Creek and Victor (near Pikes Peak) (two foot gage steam)
Tinytown (approx 15" ga steam), Denver area.
Royal Gorge
Leadville
7.5" clubs, but never researched as I knew I wouldn't have time. Next trip, hopefully 2011.
My rides at Chama and Silverton were exceptional because I got to do them on a speeder and that is an incredible way to see those RRs. 3 days at Chama and 2 at Silverton (during their Railfest). Hog heaven. Photos and video clips of the whole trip at
http://picasaweb.google.com/milbournes/Colorado
Enjoy.
Be aware that seating at Pikes Peak is assigned and some seats face uphill and some down. Did not know this going in, but we were fortunate to be assigned the first uphill facing seats behind the driver on the right. Left is better as that is the side with the view, but we had the best right-side seats which let us see out front quite well. If you reserve far enough ahead, you may be able to request particular seats. If so ask for left front, or as close to the front facing uphill as you can get. During high season, the trains run in two sections with an older single unit car ahead of the newer double cars. I'd have a slight preference for the single cars also since you can more easily see out the back end on the way back.
Feel free to contact me offline with any questions. I might be able to offer a few pointers on various details on where to stay, where to eat etc.

Hey John:
You can visit the Temecula Shortline. I'm about 35 minutes north of Poway on the way to Riverside Live Steamers.

I am starting to put together plans for the 7 1/4 Koppel rack loco.
Would any one have drawings for the regulator that comes off the steam dome.
Cheers,
Chris.

Hi Arno,
Thanks for the "Heads-up". I've been busy, so much so, that I never had a chance to view the website.
I noticed that the Link gets split? I've tried to re-paste it below....hopefully it's now in one piece.
