Hello,
I sm building #50 in 2.5 scale. I am in the begining with working on the frame, I have some basic demisions from the colorado railroad museum. I plan on using gas/hydraulic drive. Looking for some more complete drawings? Also would like to share information with someone who has a #50. I know RMI sells a very nice version. I have to build one do to limited funding. All information is greatly appreciated.

John,
Years ago I purchase a full side profile line drawing of the #50, at a NG Convention, and thought they came from the CRRM. I recall seeing less detail drawings, side and front and back, in the Narrow Gauge Gazette, a search should tell which issue.
A friend scratch builds in G scale and often buy's On3 or Std Gauge O equipment, to use for scaling up to 1/22.5 scale for building. He also built the prototype for the LGB G gauge modem. So if wanting more plans, they are out there.

The RMI version is very nice unless you're interested in fidelity to the prototype. I have a #50 in 2.5" scale, from Easlon castings (I think) about 60% complete, along with two folio drawings in 1:4.5 scale. I plan on finishing it as it was for the first years of its life on the Sumpter Valley. I don't know where you're located but the CRRM just brought it back to life after much of the drivetrain was destroyed at the Roaring Camp and Bigfoot RR.

John,
I scratch built a D50 in 2 1/2" scale. It is powered by a 5 hp Honda gasoline engine driving an Eaton #7 hydrostatic transmission. For reference material I used a 1/4" scale AMS On30 model and erection and ancillary drawings from The John Maxwell Narrow Gauge Collection http://www.colong.com/. Unfortunately, Bruce Maxwell who was running the operation passed away last July and according to an announcement on the web site the operation is shut down indefinitely. I will send you a couple of pictures off line. If I can help with specific questions, just ask.

Hi John,
I have built two gas hydraulics, not #50 type, but if I can be of any help on the drives let me know.

Rudy van Wingen had some castings for the 50 also. I don't know what happened to them but one was for the coupler pocket and I think one for the radiator but that was some time ago so don't know who or where they would be now. Also the fellow who bought either Little Engines or Railroad Supply about fifteen years ago had counter weights that were steel castings, I got four of them along with four wheels but he sold the business to someone else
The drawings I got were from the Colorado RR museum in Golden, three sheets if I remember correctly but don't know where they are at this time

Hello John
for prototype information, I suggest to join the Davenport2245 group at yahoo:

This group is dedicated to all fans of the D&RGW #50 and has a lot of photos from different timeframes.

Hello John,
My name is Dave Bucher. I have been a lurker on the list for several months now. I have not had much large scale building experience. But the D&RGW No. 50 is the locomotive I too would like to build.
All this great information has forced me out of my silence.
I feel that this project is such that my brother (he is an experienced machinist)and I could also build a creditable 2.5 version.
I would love to share building information on such a project
I have learned a lot from all of the information that has already been shared on the list.
Thanks to everyone for the great resources.

Sorry thought that what I wrote indicated someone else would or could have the castings or moulds if they exist. I knew that Rudy had passed and yes I miss the crusty fellow who at any chance would give me a dig about something
Will try again does anyone down there where he was at remember the 50 that either he or he and another fellow were building in the mid 90s? That is what I was referring to as the casting for the lift and coupler pocket were done quite well and it seems that there were more.

Hi Boyd,
The product line of Rudy's "Como Roundhouse Products" was taken over by Paul Lavacot's "Ridgway Roundhouse Products" . I do not see any parts for the #50 listed, but they may be called something else. His product listing descriptions are not very detailed. I would e-mail him about what you are looking for. His contact info is on the web page.

Hi John, RMI has several of the castings you need for the 50, they have the wheels, pole pockets for the draw bars, the steps as it is fitted with now, and the exhaust stack. Mammoth locomotive works shows the 50 in there catalog but i have never done business with him, it is really a loss that the John Maxwell collection is gone that was a great resource for all narrow gauge builders. However i was (am) planning on building one myself and have all the drawings that John Maxwell offered for it i think there are 5 sheets but i would have to dig them out to count them, most of them are really of little use for building a model but kind of neat to look at. I don't think it is illegal to make copies as long as it's not for profit!
If this is something you may want e-mail me and i'll see what i can do.

Bruce, I think what to do is contact some of his old friends down there about it
As they would know about his building the 50 as I remember it was he and another Fellow who were doing it, for which one I don't, could have been for the other fellow
But the coupler pockets and such were cast iron I think but again it was fifteen years ago
When I was going to and started to build one which I have the frame ready for axle boxes which are also done but not for a fifty due to the side rods I could not figure out how to do alone
I know, Rudy you are laughing at me right now from above over all of this saying you old fart
You cant remember a thing I told you so. He is always in my memory's when I see the bunch from CA

I have the second Rudy #50 under construction in my garage right now. Bought it off the Joshua Tree group last year. From what I hear is that the patterns for the 50 were loaned to RMI but never returned so all the castings are available through Roll Models. I still need to buy the radiator, smoke stack, and some other castings from RMI to have every thing I need to finish the engine.

Thanks and about the RMI stuff if they didn't modify anything you can bet they are right on knowing how Rudy was. I knew somewhere out there someone would remember them. Now about RMI, the thing to try is Paul Garin who used to own it possibly he could help out in the pattern return dept. The present owners are different to deal with at the best as I have found so hope all goes well.

Sorry for the slow reply. Job gets into the way. I never expected the massive number of responses. I did not know RMI will sell individual castings not listed in their price list. Like the grille shell. I will look into that further. I have purchased wheels and a coupler from RMI with good results. I am not building exact to scale, I like the larger size of RMI. I am trying to lay out the supension. Are you using ball bearings on the axles, or journals? Is the supension fully functional?
I am in central new mexico. I did go to the CRRM in colo 2yrs ago. I did get a chance to get a very few basic deminsions of #50 in the roundhouse. It was almost completely torn down for repairs. Hard to walk around all of the pieces. The people were very nice, I did not want to impose too much.

John,
For the journal boxes in my D50 I used take up bearings (see www.thebigbearingstore.com).
An additional source of information on the D50 is the Quick Pic Book by Tim Mulina, available from BHI Publications
RMI will sell individual castings not listed in their on-line catalog, just call.
